From the recording Family Portraits (Volume V)
"Codependent" is love-song. But with a twist. Some unions are sprung from very healthy sources. Two people just love each other. But others spring from darker. sources...the need to enable some darker need. Classically, that could be a harmful substance -- alcoholics and drug addicts propping each other up and colliding in denial about the harm they do themselves, each other and the people around them. But it can also be other, less obvious reasons.
In the case of my (now deceased) parents, it was colluding in covering up the stark fact that one of my siblings was in need of help more than the others. Although there was a lot of love in our house, there was also a lot of dysfunction. One example of which was that both my parents colluded extraordinarily in blatant denial of one of my brother's autism, despite the fact it was blatantly obvious to the rest of the world. Instead, they pretended that everything was fine and that said sibling was as capable as the rest of us.
The song is sung from the perspective of my parents as a love song to each other. (They did really love each other, dysfunction or nae). I thought that would make for a pretty interesting theme.
Lyrics
Codependent
Hey, can you keep a secret?
The shame and blame only shared between us
Help me stay in denial
A while longer
You should try it!
You put the fun back into dysfunction
You and me, we’re
All at sea, without a compass
God, I love you!
So much fun, yeah!
We are co-dependent
We are so invested
We like happy endings
Everything is fine and dandy!
Hey you!
There’s nothing to see here
I know
What’s best
For me and my flesh and
Blood, sweat, tears
Ignore your deepest fears!
You put the “amen” back into
Enablement
Deluded
Acrobats without a net
Put skeletons
Back in the closet
We are co-dependent
We are unrepentant
We like happy endings
Everything is fine and dandy!
Tiny voices inside
Whisper
Only sometimes
Most of the time
I tow the party line
‘Cos
We are co-dependent
We are unrelenting
We like happy endings
Everything is fine and dandy!
I love you, I love you
I can depend on you
You keep my secret safe
I can depend on you
I love you, I love you
I can depend on you
You keep my secret safe
I can depend on you
