This song is a commentary how people I know who claim to be something -- an actor; musician; photographer; musician; whatever -- whilst actually very rarely practicing their supposed craft. Typically, they will have an unrelated job. It's like it has become generally accepted that you just define yourself: You Are What You Say You Are.
But although I playing with them, I am not dissing these people. Whatever gets them through. As the lyric goes:

And it's not as if I haven't got a vanity project of my own...
